The Centre for Health Informatics (CHI) is one of three research centres in the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI). Founded in 1999, CHI is the longest-running digital health research centre in Australia. The Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic researcher to contribute to a major new research program in Medical Artificial Intelligence under the supervision of Prof. Enrico Coiera. The aim of this program is to research, develop and evaluate a new generation of interactive software agents incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) to support both clinicians and consumers across a wide set of tasks. We are looking for individuals that can bring their specific expertise into a multidisciplinary team, and work as part of that team to develop real-world systems. We are looking both for academic rigour and outputs, as well as pragmatic engineering and problem solving.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with a diverse team of highly experienced and internationally recognised senior researchers in the Centre for Health Informatics to (a) identify and evaluate potential high value use cases for AI in clinical and consumer settings; (b) contribute to the architecture and engineering of adaptive conversational agents (c) develop and evaluate agent prototypes.

Selection Criteria for Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Level A applicants :

Essential

  • PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Health Informatics  or a related field.
  • Strong theoretical and applied background in machine learning including neural networks, as well as quantitative research with exceptional analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the application of learning technologies to speech or natural language.
  • Demonstrated understanding of underlying system architectures and software stacks needed to support interactive real world learning applications.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python or R, and exposure to machine/deep learning libraries and environments such as TensorFlow, Caffe, Spark, Keras or Theano.
  • Demonstrated research track record with peer-reviewed publications.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in making a contribution to academic life and a commitment to diversity in the workplace.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of an effective team.

Desirable

  • Understanding of health care applications
  • Experience with application of learning technologies to image and video data.

Selection Criteria for Research Fellow - Level B applicants :

Essential

  • PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Health Informatics  or a related field.
  • Strong theoretical and applied background in machine learning including neural networks, as well as quantitative research with exceptional analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the application of learning technologies to speech or natural language.
  • Demonstrated understanding of underlying system architectures and software stacks needed to support interactive real world learning applications.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python or R, and exposure to machine/deep learning libraries and environments such as TensorFlow, Caffe, Spark, Keras or Theano.
  • Outstanding research track record with peer-reviewed publications.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure research grant funding.
  • Demonstrated academic knowledge in the discipline and a capability to deliver high quality learning and teaching, including the delivery of programs, lectures and tutorials.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to academic life, administrative tasks of the Centre and a commitment to diversity in the workplace.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as both a leader and as a member of an effective team

Desirable

  • Understanding of health care applications
  • Experience with application of learning technologies to image and video data.
  • Experience in successful research supervision.
  • Experience in writing IP disclosures and patent descriptions 
  • Experience in the development of ongoing partnerships with industry and/or professional bodies.

This position would suit applicants with the desire to research and develop artificial intelligence applications for healthcare, and who can demonstrate experience in using robust modern methods to develop and evaluate AI systems for real world applications.

Salary Package:  Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Level A) base salary $88,420 to $94,760 p.a or Research Fellow (Level B) base salary $99,879 to $118,174 p.a., plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.

Appointment Type: Full time, 24 months fixed term position.
