Macquarie is the university of pioneering minds. Globally recognised as one of Australia's leading research universities, Macquarie is a place where extraordinary new possibilities come to light. We've helped people to hear, introduced wireless internet technology to the world and broken through traditional boundaries by appointing Australia's first female vice-chancellor.

At Macquarie you'll join a vibrant community of diverse perspectives, all working towards a brighter future for our communities and our planet. Surrounded by beautiful parkland campus, our students and staff are free to explore and discover, supported by facilities including a high-tech library, private teaching hospital, gym and pools, childcare facilities, a campus train station and the newly expanded Macquarie Centre shopping complex next door.

In Macquarie's Faculty of Science and Engineering you'll join passionate researchers and educators blazing new trails in the spirit of discovery and exploration. Encouraged to think boldly, and supported by some of Australia's most outstanding facilities, brilliant minds converge in our faculty to create incredible new possibilities: the world's first attempt to synthesize complex life, the creation of Wi-Fi, the discovery of dancing dwarf galaxies, and the development of blue LED light. Inspired by challenge and opportunity, we look forward to welcoming you as we imagine a new future together.

Join us and start seeing the world in a different light.

The Role

The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences are inviting applicants for a Research Fellow to participate in a joint research project on 3D multi-observable probabilistic inversion between DeBeers and Macquarie University for the physical state of the lithosphere and upper mantle beneath selected regions within the African continent. The candidate will join a large research group (led by A/Prof Juan C. Afonso) on lithosphere and mantle dynamics/inversion and work primarily on implementing cutting-edge algorithms into existing programs developed at Macquarie (e.g. LitMod_4INV) as well as working on new methodological developments for large probabilistic inversions and applications to study the African lithosphere.

Although the new methods will be applied to real datasets to study specific regions in the African continent, the project has a major computational/programming component. Research tasks which will include i) programming (Fortran and Matlab), ii) testing, benchmarking and validating new algorithms/codes, iii) integrating datasets and big-data analysis, and iv) performing multi-observable inversions of datasets covering regions in Africa.

Selection Criteria

To be considered for these positions, applicants must respond to the selection criteria below and upload as a separate document in the application process.

  • PhD in a relevant discipline i.e. geophysics, physics, applied mathematics, or computer sciences
  • Extensive experience with Fortran and Matlab programming languages
  • Extensive experience with geophysical datasets (e.g. seismic, magnetotelluric, gravity, etc)
  • Publication record in leading research journals to commensurate with experience
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills
