About the Department

The Department of Physics and Astronomy within the Faculty of Science and Engineering is one of the leading physical sciences Departments in Australia. It hosts the MQ Research Centre in Astronomy, Astrophysics and Astrophotonics (MQAAAstro), one of the largest and most active astronomy research groups in Australia with about 40 current staff, postdoctoral fellows, higher-degree research (HDR) students and support staff. Strong links are maintained with astronomers at the nearby headquarters' of CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science and the Australian Astronomical Observatory.

The Department comprises around 30 academic staff with international research profiles and world class facilities in photonics and laser science, quantum science and technology, and astronomy. We teach full undergraduate and postgraduate programs in physics and astronomy with an emphasis on research-informed teaching and training graduates who are prepared for all kinds of careers. The Department is strongly committed to the principles of growing gender equity and diversity in its membership and in the physical sciences in general, and maintains an active Diversity Committee. Our efforts have been recognised by a Pleiades award from the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity in Astronomy chapter of the Astronomical Society of Australia.

The Role

Expressions of Interest are invited from suitably qualified postgraduate students or appropriately qualified individuals who wish to apply for employment as a lab demonstrator or tutor in the first and second year physics teaching laboratories for Session 1, 2018.

Demonstrators and tutors must be able to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. In addition they should have:
• Thorough understanding of 1st year physics concepts and theory.
• Thorough understanding the theory of uncertainties and how to apply that understanding in a lab setting.
• The ability to manipulate standard equipment in a first year physics laboratory
• The ability to teach undergraduate students who have little to no physics background in a supportive way.

Appointment type: Casual

Remuneration: Remuneration is in line with the current Macquarie University Academic Staff Enterprise Agreement
