The Department

The Department of Molecular Sciences integrates chemical and biomolecular sciences to achieve a sustainable environment, understand health and disease, and advance new molecular technologies. The Department houses a comprehensive range of modern research and teaching facilities including the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility (APAF).

APAF has a national and international reputation for proteomic technologies which it developed 20 years ago. It has been at the forefront of technology development since that time and delivers a professional analytical service to clients across the department, faculty, university and industry in mass spectrometry, protein analysis, and data analysis. APAF is partly funded by BioPlatforms Australia, partly by Macquarie University and partly by its commercial work.

The Role

The University seeks a Scientific Director who will play a key role in setting APAF’s strategic objectives and priorities in alignment with the Department, Faculty and University strategic framework. This position reports directly to the Head of Department, Molecular Sciences

he role is generally divided between delivering a collaborative technology development and application research programme, delivering on contract analysis, business development for the whole of APAF’s activity, and providing leadership to APAF and its staff.

The successful candidate will lead the Australian Proteome Analysis Facility (APAF) to deliver research, academic and analytical excellence to the academic, commercial and government sectors with mass spectrometric and protein analysis methodologies. The Scientific Director will also be responsible for:

    • Providing thought-leadership and driving business development
    • Overseeing APAF’s operations and leading a team of professional and academic staff
    • Delivering strategic advice and liaising with key external partners and stakeholders
    • Leading an independent research programme and overseeing the Quality Assurance, Accreditation and Health and Safety for APAF

Selection Criteria

To be considered for this position applicants must respond to the selection criteria below in a separate document as part of the application process.

Essential

  • A PhD degree and/or equivalent qualifications and experience in a relevant science discipline
  • Ability to lead a team to achieve organisational objectives through positive and collaborative approaches 
  • Ability to identify and capitalise on opportunities to grow revenue or funding
  • Ability to develop a strategic plan including operationalising the strategy in a business unit, organisation or department 
  • Experience in overseeing or managing the operations of an analytical facility or specialist laboratory environment   
  • Experience leading an independent research program in technology research (e.g. technique, method or instrumentation), development, and application including developing and updating experimental and/or theoretical techniques
  • Experience implementing and overseeing safe work practices in an analytical facility or specialist laboratory environments including a strong commitment to Health and Safety legislations and regulations
  • Track record of high quality publications including a demonstrated capability to build collaborative research partnerships

Additional criteria for Level C

  • A substantial record of publication of innovative and impactful research results
  • A demonstrated record of success in attracting competitive research funding
  • A demonstrated record of excellence in teaching

Salary Package: from $99,879- $118,174 (Level B) or $121,953- $140,246 (Level C), plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading
