Macquarie University is building a multimillion dollar initiative in Synthetic Biology as one of its Future-Shaping Research Priorities. The Department of Molecular Sciences (MolSci) is currently seeking TWO suitably qualified, Postdoctoral Research Fellows for a collaborative project in Synthetic Biology. Specifically, the project is focused on the engineering of bacteria to efficiently and rapidly convert sugars from various renewable sources into hydrogen gas. The successful candidates will be responsible for experimental design and execution; including, design of genetic componentry, genetic reprogramming/metabolic engineering of bacteria; and the genomic, proteomic and metabolomic analysis of new strains. They will communicate their research findings through high-end scientific publication and by presentation at relevant scientific and industry-based conferences. The three year project is funded through the ARENA R&D Program "Renewable Hydrogen for Export”. Reporting will be to Professor Robert Willows and Dr Louise Brown.
The successful applicant will have PhD in synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or a related field, and demonstrated experience in synthetic biology.
Applicants with the following experience will be highly desirable:
- Experience supervising graduate students.
- Previous experience with developing high-throughput analyses.
- Experience using biological software modelling programs.
- Experience with industrial fermentation processes.
- Previous experience with development of hydrogen fuel cell technology and/or other research involving hydrogen gas.
The Department of Molecular Sciences (MolSci@MQ) is a research intensive department of academics and students who study and teach chemistry and molecular cell sciences. - PhD in synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, or a related field.
- Excellent knowledge and demonstrated experience in synthetic biology/metabolic engineering and/or related biochemical techniques.
- Extensive experience in genomic, proteomic and/or metabolomic analyses.
- High level written and oral communication skills with the ability to represent the research team effectively internally and externally, including at national and international conferences.
- An ability to relate to and engage with other staff and students across diverse scientific backgrounds.
- A record of publications in quality, peer reviewed journals.
- A track record of working on research projects both individually and in a team-based environment.
