Associate Professor/ Senior Research Fellow – Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

The Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic senior researcher to take a leadership role in a major new research program in Medical Artificial Intelligence and Precision Healthcare. The aim of this program is to research, develop and evaluate a new generation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to support both clinicians and consumers in making personalised decisions about their care, based on data in electronic health records.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with a diverse group of highly experienced and internationally recognised senior researchers at the Centre for Health Informatics to:

  • identify and evaluate potential high value use cases for precision healthcare in clinical and consumer settings
  • contribute to the architecture and engineering of precision healthcare systems
  • develop and evaluate system prototypes

About You

You will bring your specific expertise in Machine learning and AI into a multidisciplinary team and help guide that team to develop real-world systems. We are looking both for academic rigour and outputs, as well as pragmatic engineering and problem solving. Ideally, you will have the desire to research and develop artificial intelligence applications for healthcare, with experience in using robust modern methods to develop and evaluate AI systems for real world applications. You will also be an excellent communicator with high quality interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.

The Centre for Health Informatics (CHI) is one of three research centres in the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI). Founded in 1999, CHI is the longest-running digital health research centre in Australia. CHI is a research partner to major healthcare providers, research institutions and governments, and has national and international industry partnerships. The Centre generates high-impact research and works with many large Australian and international Electronic Health Record datasets and have expertise in the development and implementation of state-of-the-art AI methods

As a part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, AIHI’s research centres work in the separate but related areas of clinical governance, implementation science, health informatics, health services and health systems and safety.

Selection Criteria:

Essential - Level C (Senior Research Fellow)

  • PhD in Health Informatics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or a related field.
  • Strong theoretical and applied background in machine learning, as well as quantitative research with exceptional analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the application of learning technologies to complex data sets.
  • Demonstrated understanding of underlying system architectures and software stacks needed to support interactive real-world learning applications.
  • Experience with relevant programming languages and environments used to develop applications of machine learning and neural network architectures.
  • A well-articulated research agenda and a track record of publications in the highest quality domestic and international journals.
  • Demonstrated experience making contributions to the academic life and administrative tasks of the Centre with a track record of effective team work.

Essential - Level D (Associate Professor)

  • PhD in Health Informatics, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or a related field.
  • Strong theoretical and applied background in machine learning, as well as quantitative research with exceptional analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the application of learning technologies to complex data sets.
  • Demonstrated understanding of underlying system architectures and software stacks needed to support interactive real-world learning applications.
  • Experience with relevant programming languages and environments used to develop applications of machine learning and neural network architectures.
  • Outstanding contributions to scholarship and research in the discipline as evidenced by ongoing publications in top tier journals and recognition as an eminent authority in the discipline.
  • Leadership skills and extensive experience in supervising and mentoring research students and staff members.
  • A national and international reputation in research and a demonstrated ability to attract industry funding or competitive grant funding and developing ongoing partnerships with industry and/or professional bodies.
  • Demonstrated willingness to undertake management responsibility at a senior level in the Centre, and to contribute at the Faculty and the University level.

Desirable – Level D and Level C

  • Understanding of health care applications.
  • Experience with application of learning technologies to electronic health record, clinical registry or genetic data.
  • A capability to deliver high quality learning and teaching, including the delivery of programs, lectures and tutorials.
  • Experience in writing IP disclosures and patent descriptions.
  • Experience using and managing cloud computing services for computationally expensive projects.
