The Department of Physics and Astronomy is recruiting a graduate with a PhD to join a research program in the physics of diamond lasers in a regime of extreme power loadings. This new project seeks to understand the factors that dictate the behaviour of diamond lasers as power scaled to the multi-kilo Watt regime. The role requires the adaptation of an existing high intensity laser system to the next level of power, use of cryogenic cooled systems and thermal lens diagnostics. The project is expected to provide fundamental optical and physical insights into the properties of diamond at extreme power densities.
You will have completed a PhD (or equivalent) within a discipline that is relevant to optics and photonics and experience in experimental research involving lasers. You will have an outstanding track record in academic achievements and publications. The position is based within the Diamond Laser Group of the MQ Photonics Research Centre on the Macquarie University campus on the north shore of Sydney. With 25 research academics, approximately an equal number of research fellows and 50 PhD students, the Centre features largely on the Australian landscape in optics and laser research. It has an outstanding international reputation in fields including photonics, lasers and laser applications, nanophotonics, quantum optics and astrophotonics. Our research fellows and students gain a diverse range of skills in theoretical and experimental physics with discipline specific skills in optics and photonics. The Diamond Laser Group researchers novel optical material materials such as synthetic diamond and related materials to address future needs in the most demanding optical applications.

- A PhD in optics, photonics or closely relevant discipline
- Demonstrated skills in design and execution of optical experiments
- Experience in high power lasers or cryogenic systems, or both
- An outstanding track record in academic achievement and publications and science publications in quality, peer reviewed journals
- The ability to work independently and interact positively within a diverse team including research students
- The ability to effectively communicate research outcomes to peers and a scientific audience
