The Project

This role will contribute to the research activities related to Prof. Di Ieva’s Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellowship project “In Search of relevant things: A novel approach for image analysis” (2020-2023, FT190100623).

This project aims to investigate how experts’ cognitive processes may be transferred to computers for the automatic recognition of visual features. By merging computer and brain sciences, the project will characterise the way the brains of experts understand what is seen, in order to translate such a process in a new computer vision tool. This should provide significant benefits, such as automatic detection in diagnostic imaging, mainly in neuroradiology, among other applications. For the first time, the combination of how a computer analyses an image and how an expert interprets it will be used as a common language to enable machines to process visual information in a manner that mimics the way human brains do.

The successful candidate will be involved in the computational analysis of the images as well as the visual tracking map, with the special task of contributing to creating the machine learning algorithm for the computerised analysis of the regions of interest. Fractal-based computational modelling and Artificial Intelligence tools will be used to characterise images, with the aim to translate the results of the neurocognitive part of the project into computer science tools, in order to improve features extraction and pattern recognition for machine-based automatic detection of salient features in images.

The project will be conducted within the research frame of the Computational NeuroSurgery (CNS) Lab at Macquarie University, led by Prof Antonio Di Ieva, neurosurgeon, neuroanatomist and computational neuroscientist.

The Role

This role will be required to support the CNS Lab activities, in terms of research, administrative functions and coordination of students, researchers and research participants. The role will work in collaboration with Prof Di Ieva and Dr Carlo Russo, as well as other Macquarie University collaborators within the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (including Department of Clinical Medicine and Macquarie Medical Imaging), Centre for Health Informatics, Department of Cognitive Sciences, Department of Computing, and the Centre for Elite Performance, Expertise and Training (CEPET). The role will contribute to the production of scientific literature and drafting of grant proposals and documents required by the ethics committee.

Key Accountabilities

  • Design the architecture and implement a software solution for the analysis of images
  • Work closely with researchers, external stakeholders and clinicians to understand user requirements and functional specifications for the development of a software solution to support neuroimaging research projects and document the technical design in alignment with these requirements.
  • Develop, test and maintain the software solution and ensure that it is compliant with privacy, security and research ethics policies and protocols.
  • Review, evaluate and maintain the software program and laboratory performance by identifying and resolving issues that arise during development and implementation phases to ensure optimum performance at all times. 
  • Monitor data integrity, data collection and management of software used for image analysis and make amendments to accommodate data quality issues.
  • Support the principal investigator with research by contributing to data analyses and writing of manuscripts for publication.
  • Contribute to the supervision of HDR students.
  • Perform any other duties as required and appropriate for this classification.

    About You

    You will hold a PhD in a relevant discipline such as computer science, neurosciences, cognitive neurosciences and/or neuroimaging. You will have solid experience in computer science with a particular interest and capability in image analysis, neuroimaging and clinical neurosciences. Candidates with expertise in visual tracking, MEG, and/or fMRI will be preferred.

  • A PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Neuroimaging or relevant discipline
  • An emerging well-articulated research agenda and a track record of high-quality publications relevant to stage of career

  • Proven knowledge of neuroimaging and visual tracking

  • Demonstrated evidence of written and verbal communication skills to consult and negotiate with other stakeholders to ensure project objectives are met
  • Demonstrated ability to work both as team member and as an individual, as evidenced by the ability to prioritise tasks and make decisions as required
  • Proven innovative approach, with the ability to self-direct research projects and supervise students.
