  • Salary Package: Research Fellow (Level B) base salary $103,914 - $122,947 plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading. Pro-rata rates apply for part-time appointments.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be required to provide advice about, and participate in, the design of studies, analysis strategies and sample size calculations for a range of applied research studies, as well as participate in the preparation of research publications, presentations and grant applications

Current research programs in which the applicant may participate include: a stepped wedge cluster RCT to investigate changes in medication error rates and harm in paediatrics; design of algorithms for the detection of adverse events in hospital; pathology and imaging testing patterns in hospitals and general practice; data on unprofessional behaviours among hospital staff; clinical and quality of life data in aged and community care services.

About You

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic health services researcher who seeks to apply their high-level data analytics skills to studies designed to improve health systems and patient outcomes.   The successful applicant with be required to work within a team to undertake analyses of large health datasets, applying appropriate statistical methods, and linking data sets where required.

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is ambitiously pushing the boundaries of progressive thinking and challenging what’s possible to solve some of the big issues of our time, both nationally and on a global scale. The Faculty forms part of MQ Health, an integrated academic health sciences enterprise which incorporates Macquarie University Hospital and primary and speciality clinics. We have active research programs in neurosciences (especially motor neuron disease, neurological rehabilitation and the clinical neuroscience of pain), cancer medicine, and vascular science, amongst others. Our Faculty hosts the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), an internationally acclaimed powerhouse researching health systems, e-health and patient safety. 

The Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research, one of the core research centres within AIHI has a multi-stream program of research which focuses on investigating the outcomes and safety of health services.  The Centre has particular expertise in assessing the impact of information technologies and investigating the role of electronic health records and decision support in supporting improved health care delivery and health outcomes.  The Centre’s research team is multi-disciplinary and applies a broad range of research techniques, from RCT designs to direct observational studies of clinical work.

To be considered for this position, applicants must indicate whether they are seeking a full-time (100%) or fractional (%) appointment in their application and upload a separate document that addresses the selection criteria below. 

  • PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g. epidemiology, public health; statistics or biostatistics)
  • Demonstrable advanced statistical modelling and analysis skills with extensive experience with statistical packages such as SAS, SPSS, R
  • Demonstrable experience in the analysis of large health datasets including the linking of datasets and the use of computational algorithms for converting data into files suitable for statistical analysis.
  • Proficiency in complex generalised linear models and mixed models analysis
  • Good research track record with peer-reviewed publications
  • Experience contributing to grant applications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with all levels of staff, students, management, health care providers and recipients, and external stakeholders.
  • Experience and interest in applied health services research
  • Demonstrated experience in making a contribution to the academic life and administrative tasks of a team with a track record of effective team work and leadership.
