· Salary Package: From $95,866 to $103,939 (HEW Level 7), plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading

· Appointment Type: Full-time, 3-year, fixed term contract

The Role

The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research is currently seeking two suitably qualified Data Stewards to provide research data support to the PVC Research Performance portfolio within the Data Science and eResearch Team. Reporting to the Director, Data Science and eResearch, they will:

  • Provide system support for research data systems, including business analysis around proposed data platforms and  administration of data repositories, (uploading datasets; creating high quality metadata; developing sound processes for data ingest) .   
  • Develop approaches to the collaborative acquisition, management, and analysis of data with researchers from a variety of disciplines. 
  • Archive and document research data, ensuring long-term availability and integrity of researchers’ datasets.  
  • Support a diverse group of stakeholders to provide engagement and training across a broad range of research areas. This will involve organising and teaching workshops in Data and Software Carpentry and data management, producing documentation and instructional material, and providing 1:1 specialist advice and consultation with researchers.   
  • Support research technology community building programs including information exchanges, events, workshops and community forums.
  • Engage with the research community to promote best practice in research data management, encourage compliance with policies and publisher / funder requirements and raise awareness of the support available for researchers.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of policy, procedures and guidelines that support effective and ethical data management. .
  • Work with other members of the Data Science and eResearch team to carry out tasks that support multi-disciplinary and large-scale research associated with data management approaches across the University. 

About You

Tertiary qualifications or comparable experience working in academic research and a thorough understanding of the research process. Knowledge of the research environment in higher education and an understanding of the principles of research data management.

Excellent ICT skills, including an understanding of software and scripting languages relevant to academic research.

Knowledge of and experience with technologies and solutions that support good data management  throughout the data lifecycle, including implementations of standards and guidelines such as the FAIR data principles .

Excellent communication and team skills, including the ability to prepare documentation for various audiences, present, and to liaise, advise and negotiate at various levels. Sound organisational and time management skills, including the ability to set priorities and perform well under pressure within a complex and changing environment.

The DVCR is responsible for the development and strategic enhancement of Macquarie University's research, research training, and innovation profile as well as the creation, support and advancement of local, national and international research collaborations and partnerships.

Within the DVCR Portfolio, the PVC (Research Performance) Portfolio aims to sustain and grow the university's research profile through the development and implementation of strategies to improve research performance and research quality, capacity and capability across the University.  

The Data Science and eResearch team is responsible for projects and initiatives that support research performance, quality and integrity with relation to data management, high performance computing, training and communications. The team guides and contributes to decision making and implementation of policy, infrastructure, processes, training and communication to effectively build data science and eResearch capacity.

  • Recent experience working with an information system in a library or higher education environment, such as a research data repository, open access repository or current research information system
  • Demonstrated experience in administering and/or deploying research data repositories or ‘active’ data storage and collaboration platforms
  • Demonstrated experience with successfully engaging with a diverse group of stakeholders within an institution, research facility or research group that spans multiple institutions. 
  • Experience with project-focused delivery to researchers of data modelling, management, and archiving that support the full research data life cycle, or knowledge of institutional data policy development and implementation.
  • Experience teaching research technology or data workshops and developing related training materials, especially those using Data / Software Carpentries approaches
  • Demonstrated practical experience in using technology to manage research data and resolving problems using a wide range of resources and tools.
  • Experience with implementing FAIR data principles in research at a project or institutional level.
  • Demonstrated experience working in or closely with (national) research organisations/facilities or similar.
