The Role
The Director LSU leads a team of specialist Learning Advisors who work with coursework students and academic staff to develop students’ academic and digital literacies, and build their professional skills and capabilities for future academic success and employability. This team provide pedagogical expertise and professional development for academic staff ensuring that discipline-specific approaches for developing students’ academic and professional literacies are embedded within the curriculum.

Through oversight of the LSU’s tiered support model and evidence-based approaches to the delivery of its enabling suite of digital, face-to-face and blended academic skills services and peer-writing support programs, the Director ensures that students develop their academic and digital literacies, and communication skills, and are equipped with an understanding of academic and professional integrity which is  necessary for their transition, academic success and employability.

About You
The successful applicant will have Postgraduate qualifications and/or extensive relevant experience in the field of Academic Language and Learning (ALL), for example in applied linguistics, education, or in academic/disciplinary discourse, an understanding of embedded and discipline-specific approaches to academic  literacies in a higher education context and a deep understanding of pedagogy and methodology required to deliver academic language and literacy programs and services in digital, face-to-face and blended modes.

Knowledge of current policy imperatives in higher education and their relevance to academic language and learning and the implementation of University-wide English Language initiatives is also desirable.

The Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) is located within the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) portfolio and is responsible for strengthening learning and teaching at Macquarie through developing academic staff capabilities, developing and maintaining a suite of quality academic programs, creating and maintaining flexible and innovative physical and virtual learning spaces and enhancing our student learning experience. The Office is also responsible for building a diverse and inclusive culture and producing ethically and engaged graduates in local and global communities.

The Learning Skills Unit (LSU) operates within the PVC Learning and Teaching portfolio and works with coursework students and academic staff to develop students’ academic and digital literacies and build their professional skills and capabilities for future academic success and employability.

  • Experience developing, managing and evaluating academic language and learning programs in higher education with evidence of positive outcomes for diverse learners.
  • Ability to collaborate with a range of stakeholders and capacity to lead, engage and influence in cross University committees, programs and projects.
  • Experience in leading individuals and teams with a high performing client-oriented approach.
  • Ability to build and manage relationships with academic staff and other key stakeholders in a higher education environment.
  • Ability to build and monitor evaluation processes to support effective outcomes.
  • Experience leading strategic initiatives and related projects.
  • Capability to communicate and influence high level internal and external stakeholders in driving and implementing new initiatives.
